Let's Talk About: How to Get Rid of Canker Sores

By N. Hugues

Canker sores, those small yet incredibly painful ulcers that make everyday activities like eating and speaking a challenge, can be a real source of frustration. In this in-depth guide, we will explore the various facets of canker sores, from understanding their causes to debunking common myths and introducing a true solution – The Canker Spanker – that has proven effective relief without the drawbacks of conventional over-the-counter medications. So let's do this - Let's talk about how to get rid of canker sores.

Unveiling the Culprits - Causes of Canker Sores

Stress: Chronic stress, a common modern-day ailment, weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to canker sores. Managing stress through relaxation techniques and mindfulness can be a crucial step in preventing these painful ulcers.

Hormones: Do you have an outbreak of canker sores when you’re close to your monthly cycle? Fluctuations in hormonal levels, especially during menstruation, have been linked to the development of canker sores. Understanding and managing hormonal changes can aid in preventing recurrent outbreaks.

Injury: Accidental bites, rough tooth brushing, or dental work that causes trauma to the delicate tissues inside the mouth can pave the way for canker sores. Practicing good oral hygiene and being mindful of dental procedures can help mitigate this risk. But let’s get real – if we could consciously avoid biting the inside of our cheek or lip while eating a big juicy burger…everyone would!

Citric Acid: Acidic foods and beverages, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and certain sodas, can irritate the mouth and contribute to canker sore formation. Adjusting your diet to reduce acidic intake may prove beneficial. Often our mouths get that “fuzzy feeling” when we’ve had too many salty chips, candy – such as chocolate, skittles or starbursts which are high in citric acid, or even eating too many delicious tomatoes, pineapple, cherries, etc. Use that “fuzzy feeling” as a strong sign to stop, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth to help avoid that inevitable canker sore.

Allergies: Some individuals may experience canker sores as a result of food allergies or sensitivities. Identifying and avoiding trigger foods can be an essential part of managing and preventing canker sores. These allergies are obviously individualized and different for everyone. Be aware that even if you’re currently unaware of being allergic to something – canker sores can be an allergic reaction to even minor, unnoticed allergens.

COVID-19: Emerging research suggests a potential link between the COVID-19 virus and the development of canker sores. Staying informed about the latest findings and taking necessary precautions may be crucial in mitigating this risk. Debunking Old Wives' Tales - Remedies to Consider

Salt: Gargling with a saltwater solution has long been considered a reliable home remedy for canker sores. A warm salt water solution can help soothe the irritation of a canker sore and is a good way to help gently rinse the area. Make sure to not overly salt the water and keep it at 2 tsp of salt to 4 cups of water for best results. However, placing salt directly onto the canker sore is incredibly…. Well…stupid. It’s wildly painful and highly irritating to the sore. The tremendous spike in pain makes it seem as though the sore hurts less once it returns to the original pain.

Gargling with Whole Milk: Some believe that the proteins in milk can soothe canker sores. While scientific evidence may be limited, anecdotal accounts suggest potential benefits. It will serve to soothe the sore and not cause further irritation. Not being a fan of commercial dairy in general, I reluctantly make this suggestion and encourage you to buy your milk from local ethical farms. Ear Wax: An unconventional remedy, but some claim that applying a small amount of ear wax can reduce canker sore discomfort. However, this approach lacks scientific backing and may not be suitable for everyone. Plus, the idea of it will certainly make the faint of heart gag! Myself included. Although, this method has been suggested and used for so long, their may some truth behind it.

Alum: An unothrodox remedy i hear of often involves applying alum powder directly to the canker sore. Alum is typically used as a pickling agent in canning different vegtables. While a few claim to find relief with this method, it's essential to exercise caution due to potential side effects. Like the use of salt this is … stupid. The tremendous spike in pain makes it seem as though the sore hurts less once it returns to the original pain. The use of Alum is absolutely not recommended.

The Pitfalls of Common Over-the-Counter Remedies

While over-the-counter medications are readily available at local pharmacies, their efficacy in treating canker sores can be questionable. Many of these products merely mask the pain without addressing the root cause. Moreover, over-the-counter medications can actually irritate the sore, and prolonging the healing process while masking the pain. Masking the pain makes the consumer temporarily feel better and believe the product is working. Meanwhile, the product is irritating the sore causing longer healing times and more use of the product. This raises ethical concerns about profit-driven motives that prioritize sales over genuine healing.
